A fountain and pool provide a striking foreground view to the bay, rooflines call forth the horizon—a house in dialogue with its setting.

This award-winning modern home on the Chesapeake Bay is both beautiful and sustainable. A concrete wall and piers flank a modern entry fountain that extends the view through to a pool and waterfront beyond. The Charlottesville-based architects selected mix of Shou Sugi-like siding (charred wood) and composite Reynobond metal panels for the walls. Exterior trellis-covered terraces are limestone and visually extend into the interior where limestone banding is mixed with polished concrete floors. Trading equipment costs for envelope design, the house is super-insulated employing Huber Zip Panels and triple-pane German windows to achieve major reductions in energy consumption.  Design Partner – Allison Ewing
