The sustainably-focused developer Stonehaus asked Hays+Ewing and the landscape firm Siteworks to design a new community near Lake Monticello, Virginia. The designers envisioned a careful balance of development with land preservation. Conservation easements will protect existing woodlands and open farmland while walking trails and vegetable gardens will help connect the residents with the natural world — and strengthen their sense of stewardship of the land.

A small nature center was also proposed, where the designers envisioned child-focused weekend activities, led by a naturalist.
