Herman Miller “Greenhouse” Factory and Offices

Commercial

with William McDonough + Partners

Signaling a new approach to manufacturing, one that enhances the health, well-being and productivity of workers, this 295,000 SF facility in Holland Michigan, was designed for Herman Miller and completed in 1995. Indoor daylighting through skylights and roof monitors and ample access to fresh air, as studies have documented, help create a pleasant work atmosphere that increases productivity and reduces absenteeism. An indoor “street”, filled with plants and connecting a café and commons, additionally creates a community atmosphere where workers can exchange ideas and feel connected to their colleagues.

The project was led by Partner, Christopher Hays, William McDonough + Partners.
