Dogtrot House at Stony Point

The heart and lungs of the house is a covered outdoor terrace between the living dining wing on one side and the bedroom wing on the other. Nature is framed, experienced, lived. The courtyard breathes fresh air into the dwelling.

Winner of the Virginia Society American Institute of Architects Honor Award, a top Virginia Earthcraft Award, and published in the Wall Street Journal. This sleek modern house re-interprets the traditional vernacular southern “dogtrot.”

The home is both eminently livable and energy sustainable. The “dogtrot” concept enhances passive cooling – air passing through the captured courtyard draws air from adjacent openings. The Shou Sugi Ban wood facade frames the covered courtyard and garden view beyond. A recently completed second phase includes a modern pool, adjoining water garden, bathhouse and garage. A red sapele trellis and gazebo provide a daily play of light and shadow; creating an oasis between the sheltering roof of the home and the woods beyond. Principal-in-Charge: Chris Hays
