Chesapeake House

Residential
Located in Charlottesville, Virginia, this 1970’s duplex was in dire need of rejuvenation. Hays + Ewing re-imagined the house as a barrel-vaulted bungalow. While maintaining the lower apartment as a separate living space, they added a floor to the upper apartment under a large vaulted roof. Employing a strategy Hays learned while studying in Vienna, the living spaces are captured under the vaulted roof with the sleeping quarters on the entry level.

With spectacular views to the south looking over to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, the open-plan living space sits comfortably among the trees.
