Charlotte Residence

A curved sheltering roof. Stone walls mark site-lines of aged oaks. A fountain reflects the sky.

Winner of the 2004 Central Virginia AIA award and featured in an exhibit on sustainable home design at the Building Museum in Washington DC.

A 4,000 SF green and modern house takes advantage of the beauty of the seven-acre wooded site. The design, led by Allison Ewing former Partner of William McDonough + Partners, is organized around a series of stone walls that extend from the interior of the house into the landscape, on axis with specimen oaks. The curved roof, like the tree canopy, hovers above the predominantly open-plan organization.
